Out of 5,400 people surveyed, 60% believed chiropractic care is an effective treatment for neck and back pain. A 2013 study published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage found that patient education combined with 12 chiropractic treatments (twice a week for six weeks) were more effective for hip Osteoarthritis than a daily stretching program or patient education alone.
Arthritis and Chiropractic Care
Many people with arthritis, including inflammatory forms such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis, who have experienced gentle spinal manipulation combined with exercise and an anti-inflammatory diet have reduced pain and inflammation, and improved mobility. Osteoarthritis responds well to chiropractic care, with results seen fairly quickly – often within two to six weeks.
People with arthritis can agree that sometimes medication alone doesn’t alleviate the pain of arthritis. Chiropractic patients with arthritis often improve without the need for pain medications. In a Clinical Therapeutics study, researchers found that half of patients with low back pain take prescription narcotics [opioids]; however, the study also showed that those who have chiropractic care are far less likely to use these drugs.
Chiropractic medicine deals with treating and preventing musculoskeletal system disorders and the effects of those disorders on the nervous system and general health. Chiropractic relies primarily on manual manipulations, drop table adjustments and instrument adjustments, all performed in a calculated way intended to restore mobility in joints. An essential first step is to take an X-ray to get a good look at the spine and neck.
Chiropractors look at a broad spectrum of issues and address them in various ways to minimize damage, slow the pace of the condition and ease pain. We want to get the joint as comfortable as possible.
As long as the disease is under control with no active flare up, patients with arthritis may respond very well with chiropractic care.
